Upright Citizens Brigade Offers Lessons in Laughter to PPP Students
/The Upright Citizens Brigade has developed performers seen everywhere from Comedy Central to Saturday Night Live. Alum of this improv comedy troupe include Amy Poehler, Tina Fey and Zac Galifanakis. Three current UCB products are in town April 28 – May 2 teaching this performance art to Germantown High School theatre students. Their five-day workshop culminates with a public performance at the Poplar Pike Playhouse Friday, May 2 at 6 p.m.
“The Upright Citizens Brigade has trained some of the top comedians in the business today,” said GHS theatre teacher and Playhouse managing director Kirie Walz. “Our students get to spend a week learning from these professionals. I can’t begin to explain the value of this experience. Plus, it’s going to be a lot of fun.”
Guiding students through this experience are members of UCB’s Los Angeles troupe: Betsey Sodaro, Mano Agapion and Toni Ramos. Sodaro did voice work for Monsters University and has appeared on the NBC comedy Animal Practice, the FOX seriesRaising Hope and on numerous Comedy Central programs. Agapion’s credits include skits on popular comedy websites like Funny or Die. Ramos has appeared in comedy shorts and competed in UCB improv tournaments.
“Working with actors and actresses that are on Comedy Central and other shows is a once in a life time experience,” said GHS sophomore Hayley Bardos. “ I am excited to be able to think on my toes and have the chance to put on an amazing show.”
The May 2 student performance will be presented at the Poplar Pike Playhouse at 6 p.m. Tickets are $5. For more information, call the PPP Box Office at (901) 755-7775 or visit ppp.org.
